RE: Hardy Cacti
I haven't tried any agaves outside yet but speculate they wouldn't make it. I might give a try Agave neomexicana, A. parryi, and A. toumeyana. Mantango got any of these for rescue?
Here are the cacti Wis winter survivors:
Coryphantha vivipara
Echinocereus coccineus
Echinocereus reichenbachii v perbellus
Echinocereus viridiflorus
Escobaria sanbergii
Escobaria sneedii
Escobaria vivipara v radiosa
Gymnocalycium bruchii (This one looks dead)
Opuntia humifusa
O. viridiflora
O. fragilis
Pediocactus simpsonii
I also have seedlings started,
Opuntia basilaris
O. compressa
O. polyacantha,
but they've been living indoors so far.

Thanks. I got mail. Agaves in Wisconsin? I think I'll chicken out and bring them indoors for a few winters.
Any other freebies out there? Lance you still want that bus greenhouse of yours?

Today I was in Anderson to see the moso shoots...
I stumbled upon an agave... the largest I've ever seen in person. Maybe the first in ground planting that I've seen. Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Hardy Cacti
ITs AMAZING how desensitized you can become to something... I was just looking back at this thread and it occurred to me how when I was there in Anderson, photographing this agave, I TOTALLY didn't see the grafitti that had been sprayed on the side of the Good Year building....
I just want to go on public record, loud and clear right at this time, that I personally do not condone grafitti in any shape or form- unless it is created or commissioned by the property owner (that is).

At least the hooligans seem to appreciate plants.
What exposure is that wall? Southern? That raised bed looks like the perfect agave spot.

N-NW if the map doesn't fail me.... Might explain why the plant had a distinctive lean towards the building....

Hey Thuja Mike
Any updated pictures on your seedlings? I am curious to see how they have come along.

RE: Hardy Cacti
I'll get some pix. The plants are growing slowly but hanging in there. I may need to water more at this point (everyday). They are in small pots with sand/gravel.

RE: Hardy Cacti
Im going to try to get those Agave out really soon.
(I had to post that so I'd have something to hold myself to).
Today, I was at Lowe's and I saw this Agave parryi.
It was good sized and almost $20. I deliberated for a minute and then I noticed a streak of variegation near the center, so I knew had to have it. (The vertical streak. The horizontal discoloration is just where I smeared the wet plant with my thumb to see if it would improve the picture).
Maybe I'll tissue culture this leaf if I find a protocol AND I ever get my hood home.
