Tncry- It looks happy anyway! Nice to have a moist spot for it.

I overwintered one here in my z. 4b/5a. The thing was really weak the next year and just sort of melted in the July heat. Methinks they don't like warm night temps in the summer!

In PEI you don't need to worry about warm nights.
It's hoping for warm days that I worry about.
:)

No need to worry, the Gunnera doesn't need or want the latter.

Here are terrible pictures of a friend's garden here in Halifax. These, scans of photos, as I never once remembered to take my camera when visiting. Both Gunnera tinctoria and manicata shown with perhaps a M. basjoo there somewhere (directly over the top of his head). He stoked their furnaces with heaps of manure, straw and compost and got results. They seemed to relish the cool Atlantic fog here. Brace yourself.

Just an update of the last post 31 May on the growth of Gunnera manicata at a friend's. If the timely rains occur as they have been then it should be a monster by late summer.

Lastly one of the best flowering trees at this time of year - Cornus kousa 'Satomi'. We thought this one would not flower well this year as last summer was so wet and sunelss. Never seen it flower so heavily.

Anyway to get these phots in the order they are uploaded?

Gunnera manicata so far this year. Just happy it survived another winter.
I still can't believe those scanned photos of the Gunnera plants in Halifax.

Gunnera as a of last weekend. Not much bigger than last year. Still trying to get more light into the ravine where it is situated. I have taken down a dozen poplars and a dozen birch but I still have a couple dozen more to go before I can open up any direct sun.
