Guy in the cubicle next to mine brought in a "pine cone".

I told him it was a "pine sphere" as it was not conical.

I know there's several different kinds of pines, but I don't recognize this one:



The pines I grew up with had 3 to several needles growing from a common thing attached to the smaller limbs.

Definitely DAwn redwood (metasequoia glyptostroboids (sp)). Here is a pic of the cone:

I've planted a couple of these. They grow really fast and are one of those "living fossil" type organisms. Fun tree!

I had some luck germinating seeds..... then leaving them in hot sun, and cooking them .... Got more, no such luck, since sowing em in Dec. Probably one of my favorite trees. They tend to love water.

Thanks for mentioning my avatar. I was looking at it last week and wondering if anyone could make out the bamboo growing on either side of the mushrooms. Can you see it?

Yesterday, I drove past a property I used to own so I could see the bamboo grove that I started. I was also going to go down a private lane that ran the length of the property to snap a photo of the dawn redwood I planted, but I could see the new owners were out on their riding mower, so I chickened out.

I only seen the bamboo when you mentioned it LOL.

After googling other dawn redwood images, it looks like a very close match. Thanks.

I have some tiny 10 inch redwoods sitting in my garage (a dawn, giant and coast), haven't picked a place to plant them yet. If they grow up I'll know what kind of cones to expect.
