Re: cold hardy palms

I have a number of small palms I got in a trade, mostly Sabal minor of various types. I am trying to decide if I should plant some of them outside this Spring or wait until they are larger. How large should they be before I should consider planting them out? How small? Strap-leaf seedlings, or have...

Re: cold hardy palms

Cold hardy to +5*F if you keep the crown dry, out of the wind, and feet in quick draining soil. Also, your average high temperature in winter needs to be around 40*F at a minimum, if you are expecting it to weather dips to the single digits. It really is a 7b palm. Soil freeze depth is also importan...

Re: Bamboo cold hardiness ranking

I haven't logged in a while since I had to stop growing bamboo. Moving to an apartment several years ago will do that though. I do still have Phyllostachys vivax growing at my parents house, but this'll most likely be the last year though (step-dad hates bamboo). My observations of vivax in the metr...

RE: 2008 Boo Shooting Diary

P. aureosulcata is shooting in the groves near downtown Cincinnati, which is about the average time it shoots in Cincinnati.

RE: Paulownia kawakamii aka Empress Tree, Dragon Tree?

Personally, I like the Empress Tree, but it's invasive here in Cincinnati much like Tree of Heaven and Albizzia julibrissin.

RE: Cold Damage So Far

I made it back over to my parents house earlier this week. The Phy. vivax looks great, zero leaf burn, but then again I don't think the temperatures dropped below 10*F with the recent cold blast at the beginning of the month.

RE: Phyllostachys parvifolia

That stinks Chris. I've been on a waiting list for parvifolia for 3 years now with Bamboo Garden. Hopefully you'll have better luck with your second division than I am having getting my first.

Re: RE: The colors of my Eucalyptus

Jake, I remember reading on the internet about a very large E. neglecta in Cincy, it was the poster child for hardiness having survived something like -19F. Indeed there was a relatively large neglecta in Cincinnati that did survive -19*F, but the next winter did it in and it wasn't anywhere near a...

The colors of my Eucalyptus

Here is a picture of the new growth of my Eucalyptus lacrimans. It made it through the winter just fine with only slight burn. I just wish we could grow a bigger variety of Eucalyptus in Cincinnati.

RE: Letters From Iwo Jima

I saw it in the theater when it came out. I found it to be an excellent film. Eastwood did it right by filming the American perspective and filming the Japanese perspective. The acting was top notch across the board too.

RE: Return of the Phyllostachys vivax 'Black Spot'

Brad, The markings have been there since the culm emerged last year. It is sporadic in the group though. Most don't have any, but a few do. This year's shoots are between 1-2' tall, but non of the lower sheaths have fallen off yet. Last year I got two culms with the markings, the year before none, a...

RE: Kniphofia

Brian, Kniphofia grows very well for me in Cincinnati. Every year except this year my clumps in a raised bed on the North side of the house have stayed evergreen. This year they were wacked back by that awful February. The clump on the South side of the house stayed evergreen and is already blooming...

That's odd that yours are having a hard time acclimating, but I guess it could be for a multitude of reasons.

I actually bought this as just P. vivax for $40 for a 1 gallon. Getting the 'Black Spot' variation was just luck.

RE: Memphis Zoo

I am fairly sure Jerry Burton has supplied the Memphis zoo with bushels and bushels of bamboo for the pandas, along with others. We had that conversation a while back, but I do remember him telling he got a call one day asking if he could be a supplier.
