new P Aurea shoots

thought it is amazing but 3 broken dead looking P. Aurea culms have 6 new shoots including one at 5 feet. Love the dark green scaly culm. What baffles me is my other clumps that seemingly have mostly dead leaves. they look shriveled during periods of low humidity. when the air is moist or it is rain...

P Aurea clumps mostly dead

Sadly, most of my clumps of P Aurea are 100 percent dead leaves. The culms still are green and limber and feel supple. No new shoots on these clumps with all dead leaves. Planted in February, they suffered, heavy snow, wind, and ice damage. I may have over watered thinking that was the problem. Desp...

Re: Moles tunneling around bamboo

It looks like they moved on. the smacking of the sidewalk created a lot of noise. now they are back under the lawn where they belong. I will try the castor oil if they come back. thanks for the replies

Re: Moles tunneling around bamboo

Thanks for the replies. I also wont use poison but just read a lot of noise will disrupt them. since there is a sidewalk adjacent to the bamboo and tunnel area, I am hitting it every few hours with a sledgehammer. I will report if if it works

Moles tunneling around bamboo

Sadly, now I see moles tunneling around the bamboo. Do they eat the roots or shoots? I have read they usually are after worms and insects. Has anyone dealt with them? thanks

P Aurea beaten by gale force winds

recently we had a gale force wind blew for 36 straight hours, blowing dirt from the cliffs. The bamboo suffered what appears to be wind burn. Much of it appeared to be older growth that was probably due to fall. Anything I can do or just ride it out? I was going to wait till fall to take out old cul...

Re: P Aurea leaves dropping and curling

Thank you! recently since this we had 36 hours of gale force wind on the Olympic coast. It really burnt the leaves as sand was blowing too. am not sure if I should just hope for recovery or something else.

Re: Henon colour change?

Oh right, Creston. You have a lot of hard freezes up that way for sure, guessing below zero F. I was reading about a fungus that looked similar to your spotting and colors. It said the fungus was not harmful. Good luck, my P Aurea are struggling, just had a huge wind event that stripped a ton of lea...

Re: Henon colour change?

new here but my culms turned purple/black after freeze and winds (Fraser outflow lol) . they are apparently P Aurea. Yours have more of a spotty color. You did have a hard winter in the Okanogan?

P Aurea leaves dropping and curling

My P Aurea bamboo have been in the ground 90 days after transplant. After a lot of snow and Ice, they were beat over the winter. Now they are dropping a lot of leaves and curling leaves. I do have 3 new shoots, one about a foot high. does this leaf look like too much water, too little water? A few n...

Re: Purple culms

Thanks Evan! They do appear to be P. Aurea. I remember when I planted some Friday, one spinal like root shot out a couple of feet with a new shoot coming up. So I have planted a bunch of runners without knowing. I will keep an eye out to see if they pop up at the neighbors. . there is a sidewalk bet...

Re: Purple culms

Thanks! I will check out the aurea you mentioned. It is a challenge with high winds and salt air I get here on the ocean. They mostly survived temps down to about 10 degrees. I am hoping for new shoots as the wind has really thinned out a few leaves. It will be a huge challenge to grow here, but nee...

Re: Purple culms

I think they are all the same, thanks. They all came from 3 or 4 clumps that were growing together. the snow and wind did leave some culms bare. Interesting, I will look into your thoughts on the variety. Is there an ancestry.com for bamboo? Does the shoot provide any clues or do most shoots look si...

Re: Purple culms

Thanks wind- borne! that makes sense as those culms are facing direct south sun, which will be north soon. I am right above the water, 140 feet above the strait. although cool, the sun is intense from reflecting off the water. this creates a couple challenges. gale force winds whip in within minutes...

Purple culms

Hello! new member , thanks for having me. In Feb. I planted some large clumping hardy bamboo. Some of the culms were 10 feet. a few days after planting, days of high wind and below freezing temps set in. Unusual for the Olympic coast where it is mild. Then 2-3 feet of snow fell, crushing one large c...
