Re: R.I.P. Parker’s Giant

Mine is still going strong, but I suspect this year it might be it. What has been the average time it takes from first sight of flowers to complete death?

Re: R.I.P. Parker’s Giant

I am sorry to her that, and was hoping for some form of recovery, but I am now beginning to really believe that this bamboo is toast. What a shame for such a large size tropical clumper with impressive cold tolerance. We must have hit 27f this year, and have burn on D. asper and giganteus, while thi...

Re: Salt Water/Bamboo...SOS!

I learned a valuable lesson about the importance of minerals. The lack of them causes yellowing in the leaves and culms and eventually death. Some of the problems people blame on fungus and viruses are really a lack of key minerals. So the issue is not just the salt, although it is indeed a problem....

Re: Dendrocalamus sp. 'Parker's Giant' flowering

I agree, it is disappointing. I thought ours looked about the same in size. I planted that in a somewhat shady place, in hopes to maximize its size potential. I can't complain too bad though. I feel sorry for the guys who just reached 5 in culms to have this happen. I have been wanting this variety ...

Re: Dendrocalamus sp. 'Parker's Giant' flowering

Well, I was emailed back by Tropical Bamboo and they have suspended all sales of Parker's giant as their large specimen is flowering. Although its still alive, they are unsure like the rest if it will make it. So Roy might be right, we should be playing taps soon. What a great shame and loss.

Re: Dendrocalamus sp. 'Parker's Giant' flowering

I hear you with the pots. I have come to hate them, although I see their uses. The fabric pots makes sense. I used them myself before moving to the place we now have, and they worked well and held up better than I expected. Just have to keep soil levels up, or the sides collapse. As far as anyone kn...

Re: Dendrocalamus sp. 'Parker's Giant' flowering

Great question. I'm interested in seeing what happens to the new shoot I have that emerged just before the flowering. Curious to see if it flowers after it finishes branching and produces leaves. So far it looks healthy. Nice and green. Lots of new branches and leaves. The entire plant is adding ne...

Re: Dendrocalamus sp. 'Parker's Giant' flowering

Fingers crossed Needmore.

In regards to gregarious flowering, does anyone have any explanation as to why not all of the Parker's have flowered? Especially if they all come from the same plant?

Re: New page with some cold damage photos & info blah blah

That is some great information, thanks for posting it. I see you had a few types that still look nice. One of those really stands out, and I'd be willing to bet this bamboo can handle the greatest range of temps. of any known bamboo and that is Phyllostachys rubromarginata. This runner intrigues me ...

Re: Vivax Black Spot stable?

Hello, I am new at this great forum. I would like to know whether Ph Vivax Black Spot (Basinigra) is a stable mutation. And how long do you have to wait untill the black spots appear on the culms? In contrast to Ph Nigra Boryana and Ph Glauca Yunzhu, my Ph Bambusoides Tanakae does not have black sp...

Re: Help ID this Bamboo

What are you thinking Allen? Looks like a Dendro, especially due to the size and lichens covering it, and the aerial roots and culm coloring, but Atlanta seems too cold for most of them. I guess its the wrong time of the year to expect a picture of a shoot. If that could be posted along with a shot ...
