Re: HOW DO CLUMPERS GROW?

This is just my experience but I've found the best way to understand runners vs clumpers is to go out and look at the types of grass in your yard as they have similar running and clumping habits. Most of your lawn would likely consist of 'running' types of grass that spread out quickly to fill the l...

Re: Is this Space too Small for Bamboo to Grow?

If it were me, I wouldn't plant there. I am assuming that the fence is the property line. In my opinion neither a running or a clumping type bamboo would be a good choice. A runner would do everything in its power to expand outward in all directions, likely into the neighbors yard. Also there really...

Re: B Castillon flowering

Very interesting, are all the culms flowering? Was the plant unusually stressed? Perhaps some of you may know, do variations like 'Castillon' have different flowering cycles than the regular Bambusoides? According to the book Farming Bamboo Phyllostachys Bambusoides (page 132) flowered in the late 6...

Re: Growing Bambusa ventricosa 'Striata' south uk ??

I don't know much about this bamboo or growing it in the UK, but I would say that if it's not super expensive it's at least worth a try if you really want it. Another thing to consider with the temperature issues is perhaps finding a microclimate in you yard. Sometimes, dependign on circumstances, a...

Your posts are being read by at least myself, probably more. I just don't often respond as I generally don't have anything to contribute to the discussion.
Please feel free to continue.

Just curious as I've read about it before, but is P. Aureosulcata 'Argus' available in the U.S.?

Re: Best Bamboo Nursery Book?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm looking for the technical aspects of dividing bamboo, times of the year where there is most work, expenses for the nursery, etc. Would Daphne's book satisfy most of that? It certainly covers digging bamboo, tools to use, best parts to dig from, and the best times to ...

Re: Best Bamboo Nursery Book?

I'm sure there are other alternatives out there so keep looking below as others make recommendations, but from the ones I have, these are my recommendations. If you are looking for information of how to structure and place your groves, plant, fertilise, identify various phyllostachys timber bamboos(...

Re: Running or clumping bamboo?

Just going by pic #1 and #9 I would lean towards Phyllostachys Aureosulcata(Runner), but there are other possible species that could have similar culms. After looking at the rest of the pics notably #2 and #6 though, I find I am confused, unless perhaps there are multiple species in these pictures??...

Re: Bamboo shoots 2018

@mshaffer Perhaps its because my boos are still young, but I avoid entering my fenced area around them from about a month before to a month after shooting to keep from accidentally stepping on a precious shoot. Hopefull someday it wont be as big of a deal and I'll also be able to cook some of them u...

Re: Bamboo in the snow

By all accounts I have heard, leave the snow in place, it will insulate your plant from the cold. That and you may actually harm the plant by trying to remove it.

Re: Phyllostachys atrovaginata (incense bamboo) question

This has been an unusually harsh winter for many of us. Generally I would say most phyllostachys will come back, just with reduced vigor, but yours being new plantings are sort of a wild card. It all depends on whether the plants were able to establish enough of a rhizome system to weather the weath...

@Glen
This is the nice thing about bamboo, It seems there is a bamboo for every situation, the trick is to find which one it is.
