Re: Getting out of Growing Bamboo in Arizona!

Sorry to hear man. But it also looks like you picked all the wrong bamboo to plant. No way any clumper will live there. And all the rest seem wrong too. I ditched clumpers the first year. When I did my search for bamboo I searched for the most heat and drought tolerant plants. But for me they also ...

Re: Getting out of Growing Bamboo in Arizona!

Well, it's been a while so I wanted to give an update for anyone following this thread. My only survivors so far are two B. multiplex 'Golden Goddess', B. multiplex 'Alphonse Karr', B. dissimulator, B. dolichomerithalla 'silverstripe', B. bambos and B. dolichoclada 'stripe' and a single surviving B....

Re: Getting out of Growing Bamboo in Arizona!

I Also live in the Phoenix area and have been looking at growing bamboo seeds. I'm certainly no expert on bamboo but I know if you plant anything that requires rich soil or at least soil that isn't almost completely deprived of organic matter in the Arizona desert soil it isn't going to grow well. ...

Re: Getting out of Growing Bamboo in Arizona!

I am no expert, but I think the problem for you might be as simple as water shortage. Bamboos are weaker than most people think. Last year, I dug a new and perfectly healthy stock of bamboo and put it in a pot (hoping to sell it). The pot was filled with black-earth, well drained, and well soaked. ...

Re: Getting out of Growing Bamboo in Arizona!

You could try screening with Teddy Bear Cholla. It may not be a perfect screen, but I bet it will make just about anyone think twice about entering your yard. On a more serious note, as others have said you gave it a shot, sorry it didn't work out. Surely there's something you can plant that will b...

Re: Getting out of Growing Bamboo in Arizona!

Well, you made a good effort. Some plants don't do well in some places. On the bright side, you can probably grow dates, pomegranates, lemons, maybe avacodos, etc, that I would love to grow but never will in my location. I just hope I can find a suitable substitute for those that don't survive. I r...

Re: Getting out of Growing Bamboo in Arizona!

Out of curiosity, have you tried Otatea in your area? Believe it or not, horrible as this sounds, I never have liked the look of them. I just don't have a spot where they would have looked good either, so never gave them a go. Only seen them offered once at a nursery up this way, and never seen it ...

Getting out of Growing Bamboo in Arizona!

I haven't been nearly as active as I've wanted to be on this site as of late, originally because of dwindling free time, but more recently because I have slowly come to the realization that successfully growing bamboo in the Phoenix area is just not feasible, at least not anymore. I say that mainly ...

Re: Forbid?

I realize this is an old thread, but figured I would add my $.02 on Forbid 4F. Details can be found in my other pest thread, here. Long story short, the stuff worked crazy good on my modest collection, at least on run of the mill spider mites. I found no webbing, so I assume it was not the bamboo mi...

Re: Systemics for Aphids?

So I wanted to give an update here, for those that might have sub'ed this thread or for anyone reading it down the road. After continuing to find insects after the acephate wore off, I started to wonder if, while I never found webs, perhaps my sap-sucking damage was the work of some kind of mite? It...

Re: Systemics for Aphids?

I actually use soil drench in both cases. Can't go spraying chemicals because of the wind and because most of it would end up going over the wall into the neighbor's yards. Much as I despise some of them, it probably isn't a good idea. I have watered less after the application. In this heat, ...

Re: Systemics for Aphids?

Quick update - acephate seems to have done the trick. Had almost overnight, complete kill off of aphids on every single bamboo in the yard. I literally cannot find living aphids despite my best efforts. I am already spotting healthy, un-molested new leaves unfurling on most plants. On the worst off,...

Re: Systemics for Aphids?

Did the nursery tell you it was okay to apply systemic Orthene after having applied systemic Imidichloprid????? It's been enough time in between and enough continuing damage that I don't have a choice if I want the worst off plants to survive at all. I still may lose one or two whole plants even if...
