Re: Winter of 2010-11 Fried Bamboo List " Hold the cheese pl
My parvifolia is seeing its 4th winter here and I have to say that it's holding its own with the best of them, i.e. bissetii and spectabilis. In fact, I'm beginning to prefer it over the rest because it doesn't weep as much as the rest do under snow loading as is happening right now as I look out th...

The size of the leaves should pin the id down, shouldn't it?

Re: 2009 Boo Shooting Diary
Thanks, Gaz and Alan! What's that they say... the first year it sleeps..? ....well, I'm glad somebody gets to.. :) On a bamboo related note, the hedge of bissetii/aureosulcata/humilis that's bordered with a rhizome barrier is putting out really slow and pathetic growth. New shoots are fewer and smal...

Re: 2009 Boo Shooting Diary
Phy parviflora putting up a couple and I had to snap one off coz it was running out of its growing area.
Phy shanghai3 putting out 3 shoots with no upsize from last year.
Phy propinqua- one itty-bitty shoot.
But the best "shoot" of all, a new baby in the family!

Re: Fertilizer
This year I'm seeing very few shoots at all on most species so those are not exhibiting the many small shoots from feeding. A couple of species are shooting quite proficiently and many are smaller but that could well be a top kill thing. Jury still out on this for me... I'm seeing that as well but ...

Re: Cold Damage-what too expect?
It unexpectedly dropped below freezing (-2°C) one night last week but no apparent damage to the shoots. Fried my aubergines and zucchinis though.

Re: Fertilizer
Sorry for this resurrection, but I was just wondering what you all thought about this. Taking into account the nuggets of wisdom by Steve in France and gaz rogers about feeding just around shooting and the resultant triggering of extra small shoots, would it not be possible to get bigger shoots by s...

Re: 2009 Boo Shooting Diary
Phy vivax hwz is up! On a slightly embarrassing note, I was careless with my lawnmower the other day . The humilis doth protest.

A good book on carpentry/timber frame construction?
Hi all,
I'm looking for a good instructional book on carpentry: more in the direction of timber frame construction than cabinet/furniture making. Does anyone know of such a book and recommend one as such?
Thanks.

Phy auerosulcata auureocaulis, bissetii and humilis sending out some shoots. Slightly disappointing, size-wise.
Far. denudata put out shoots a week and a half ago but seems to have pressed the pause button.

Re: Plants this year.
I just planted a japanese maple and an ornamental cherry tree over the weekend. I'm itching to get a Magnolia Grandiflora after realising the Magnolia I bought a couple of years ago isn't a grandiflora. Other than that, I've got a bunch of the usual vegetables growing in the veg bed and I'm trying t...

Re: 2009 Boo Shooting Diary
I saw 2 Phy auerosulcata spectabilis shoots today and a couple more from Far denudata.
Most of my bamboos are leafing out from dead looking culms. Vivax, aurea and decora are the exceptions.
PS- I like the new look!

RE: 2009 Boo Shooting Diary
Fargesia Rufa has started to poke through! Finally, I can get in on the act!! :) I've got quite a few phyllos roaming free and I'm really interested to see where they get to this year. I've also got a willow in between the vivax and humilis and the anticipation with that is killing me. Kinda like Al...
